Mark Latham, Puts Australia’s Safety At Risk To Take The Throne
By Gabrielle Reilly

Australian Opposition Leader, Mark Latham: Mark Latham has just played a grave and dangerous game to win his ultimate political ambitions... inauguration as Australian Prime Minister in the upcoming election. Mark Latham vows, if elected, to withdraw the Australian troops from Iraq and change Australia’s alliance with America. Latham’s strong ambitions must be overriding his common sense as he watched the successful strategy and unexpected election results of newly elected socialist Spanish Prime Minister, José Luis Rodriguez Zapatero. Don’t be duped by politicians playing “politics.” It really doesn’t get any clearer than this dangerous stunt. As Latham licks his chops over the impending election he has endangered the Australian population in two ways.

Firstly, he puts Australia in EXACTLY the same political situation that inspired the terrorist attack which influenced the Spanish elections. Let’s pray Australia will not be subjected to that. Secondly, he will change the 53 year old alliance with the US which has allowed Australia protection. American protection has enabled Australia to only have to spend a token 2% of GDP on defense. As a result Australian’s have enjoyed better education, a flourishing economy and a better quality lifestyle. Were grown ups… we have to take the good with the perceived bad. Agree with America or not, breaking that alliance would be like throwing all the cops out of your town and having to defend yourself. That would be reckless and dangerous to the safety of our families.

Sitting on Australia’s doorstep is Indonesia, the largest population of Muslims in the world with a very active terrorist network operating a base their. Remember, the Bali Bomber mastermind lived in a suburb of Perth, Western Australia? Where are all the sleeper cells? I would suggest Australia has never needed America’s protection more since the Japanese were heading south. The terrorists can not be bought, appeased, nor negotiated with. Either convert to Islam or perish. Well, actually that is not entirely true; if you did convert you may not be “Islamic” enough so you still could perish as many have.

Whether you agreed with the Iraq war or not, something the majority of both liberals and conservatives do agree on, is that you have to stay for the reconstruction. Stabilizing the country to allow the citizens to rebuild there life is the only humane response after temporarily destabilizing the country. For the global perspective 911 taught us that broken countries are the breeding ground of terrorists and provide for terrorist training camps. In this new chapter in world history, oceans no longer protect us from our enemy. We better be sure we don’t leave a terrorist “playground” in Iraq.

Although us Aussie’s love to sit around having a beer and dreaming up a better world, I do believe when it comes down to it, common sense will prevail… Latham played the wrong hand on this one. Latham’s foreign policy would leave Australian’s on there own island in a world traversed by transportation and technology. “Global shrinkage” no longer allows a simple little island to remain an isolated little island. Oceans no longer protect Australia. Turning away the only rescue ships that would actually take the time and expense to rescue Australia if needed, would be a foolhardy strategy. It is really only a strategy on the table, because Mark Latham wants to win this election more than making wise strategic decisions for the safety of Australia and the world.
