Schapelle Corby - Chief Judges Response To Schapelle Corby's Appeal
By Gabrielle Reilly

Schapelle Corby Home Page

Schapelle Corby: Schapelle Corby's pleas on April 28th 2005, to the judges in the Denpasar District Court appear to have had little affect. A translation of Schapelle Corby's appeal in court was later given to the three panel judges. On April 29th, chief justice Linton Sirait said he now knew what Schapelle had said in court and his response was very disheartening:

"Not enough - he or she has to prove he or she is not guilty. Every inmate would say I'm not guilty. I'm still looking for something that can be related to the law." his translator told Nine Network

Earlier that day Sirait had handed a life sentence to a South African heroin dealer. Cannabis and heroin fall in the same class of drugs in Indonesia.

Schapelle Corby's bag had not been weighed in Bali to compare with her bag check-in weight in Sydney, nor were her bags finger printed.

If found guilty, Schapelle could face a firing squad or be sentenced to life in prison.

If the drugs were deliberately taken into Bali, the financial return would have only been approx $10,000, a fraction of Sydney's street value of approximately $60, 000 where the drugs originated.

What has been Australian Prime Minister Howards response to this?

Schapelle Corby Petition

"JOHN HOWARD: I am following it. I've taken a personal interest, in the sense that I have been concerned, on the face of it, about some aspects of it. I choose my words very carefully because I have to respect the legal system of another country, and people do know, when they go to other countries, how tough their drug laws are." Dateline

How can Bashir get 2 and a half years for killing 200 people and your getting life in jail for something you did not do? we dont think its fair what they are doing to you and we are with you all the way as many people are. good luck" McDonald Family, Australia

"No one should have to face this in her situation. I request her case be looked at and judged fairly. Perhaps extradite her to Australia. All this is doing is preventing tourists from feeling free to visit Indonesia and perhaps will affect future humanitarian efforts there. Indonesia’s call, isn’t it?" Rob, USA

"love you schapelle with you all the way be strong and hope that you get out safely........." angie Australia

"As you know, the majority of the Australian Public are sure that Schapelle Corby is entirely innocent, and is simply an victim in a situation gone very bad. Can you imagine yourself or a loved one in her shoes. Her trial hasn't even been fair, evidence gone missing etc. This admirable gril has struck a cord in the Australian heart. What is the Australian Goverment doing to assure the community that you are doing everything in your power to look after Schapelle Corby?" Callum, Australia

"It seems more than obvious that Schapelle has been made a total 'scapegoat' and she is innocent of any wrong-doing. How strong she must be to have already endured 7 months in a sub-standard jail but how much longer that that strength last? I pray for her and send her all the love I can all the time - we've never met and yet I feel that I know her personally and even feel her pain. Keep the chin up Schapelle - you're a hero, not a drug smuggler! You WILL be free soon or 'hell will break loose' amongst you thousands of supporters. All my love" Barb, Sydney

"I am the Mother of three daughters and my heart goes out to this young woman, her family and her friends. What has happened here could happen to any person who chooses to travel. This is a terrifying fact.I believed that one is innocent until proven guilty. What a joke. I loved my holiday in Bali. I will never go there again. Keep on being the strong woman that you are. Against all odds. There are so many people sending strong thoughts to you"
ross, australia

" Keep on being the strong woman that you are. Against all odds. There are so many people sending strong thoughts to you. John Howard. You have mucked up big time. Get schapelle home." Yvonne, Cairns.

"Please free Schapelle Corby!" Russ Richards, California USA

"it was said by Howard or one such like spineless pollie, over some trivial thing (I can't remember) 'Very Un-Australian'. Well I don't see Schapelle plight as a trivial issue, but I do see it Very UN-AUSTRALIAN, come on pollies, earn your moneys, rustle up a set of balls between yourselves and do your job!" Trev,. Perth, Australia

"Please free this wrongly accused woman. Thank you. Kevin, Virginia, USA.

"We are continually being told that the Indonesian judicial system is an "inquisitional" one; that is, the judges aim at finding out the truth of the matter. I don;t see too much evidence of this. Judges who play with their mobile phones, read books, or nod off to sleep don't give me the impression that they are finding out the truth of the matter. I am appalled at what Schapelle Corby is going through - even if she were released now, I doub t that she could ever go back to a normal life. "TRust the Indonesioan justice system:" - John Howard's remark is typicial political speak. Why should we trust a system about which the scuttlebut is that it is the most corrupt in the world. Could so many Australians be wrong, when 88% of them believe that Schapelle is innocent? Or do they recognise something which politicians, lawyers and judges do not - that there is a place for one's gut feelings about the bleeding obvious which flies in the face of apparent so-called facts? I only hope the massive outrage of people can be harnessed into campaigning for international human rights on a wider scale.
One more comment. The death penalty - in the 20th century, 26 million people died at the hands of capital punishment. This should tell us that capital punishment is used simply to get rid of people regarded as 'problems' or 'human trash'. Has the death penalty stopped the drug problem in SE Asia? Clearly not, and Governments need to look at other ways of addressing this issue. Please add my name to the pettition." - Chris, Geelong, Australia

"Why wont any one finger print the bag the damn Dope was in, I cant understand it, its almost like the someone is hiding something, why? Are they scared to be shown up for their mistake, this girl is innocent.

I personally ask all aussies to boycout Bali, there are better places and not barbaric, they wont even supply toilet paper how uncivilised is that. I urge all Aussie to visit elsewhere, stuff the Indonesions and stop funding them, draw the bloody line will you." Margaret, Australia

"We believe that Schapelle Corby is innocent, How can anyone say this is right every thing is wrong. She is innocent. John Howard get off your bum and do something NOW before we Loose a great Aussie."
Louise, Australia

"I am appalled at this tragic case.Any intelligent person can see she has been set up by some monsters.
Let all Australians forwith never ever visit Bali again ever.Finish!!!!!!! She is not getting justice and we can all see that. Maybe this is another Muslim attack......... ps. I can smell they don;t want to see her get off...Maybe they could give her 2 and one half years jail like that Muslim cleric involved with the murder of 202 souls in the Bali bombing eh?? Fair exchange???better than life at least." David, Australia

"Hey, John Howard. If you have any integrity, GET THIS GIRL HOME!!" Neale, NSW

"free schapelle corby! I leave tomorrow for the philippines and Im taking the precaution of wrapping my case in glad wrap. I dont trust the baggage handlers anymore. I have emailed qantas and asked what measures they have in place to protect passengers luggage and i have not received a reply so im wrapping the bag myself. We need tougher controls on who can bring what into a secure area where baggage is." Geoff, Australia

"Pleeeeaaaase FREE Schapelle. She has suffered for 6 months already. Don't you think that even if she had done it (which i very much doubt) she would have learnt her lesson by now ???? Let her go!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" Nicky, Australia

"I am a 27 year old American currently living in Taiwan. On hearing Schapelle Corby's story, I felt a mixture of shock, fear, and compassion. Having traveled around Asia quite a bit, I know this innocent young woman could just as easily been me, or any of my friends here. Please let me know if I can do anything else to help out. Ms. Corby will be in my thoughts and prayers, and I will tell others to sign this petition." Holly, Taiwan

"It is time for the "authorities" to pursue the real criminals. Free this woman." Fred, New Hampshire, USA

"It makes no sense what so ever that Schapelle would want to take this drug to Bali and sell it for a fraction of it’s value back in Australia. She appears to be the innocent vctim of a drug scam that went wrong. There is too much doubt to convict her, that’s for sure." Tony, Unknown

"If they kill her or give her life then they should pay big time" Gary, Unknown

"To Prime Minister Howard, Please, do all you can to saves this woman's life. And you CAN do so!
Thank you so much!!!" Christian, Rose Bay, Nova Scotia, Canada

"When it happens to someone John Howard loves, then he might take real notice. Until then,we are all at
risk." Liz, NSW, Australia

"To John Howard If Schapelle Corby were the daughter of a well-to-do family in the Eastern Suburbs of Sydney, if she did her schooling at Ascham, if her parents threw Liberal Party Cocktail Parties, she would not have spent even one night in jail in Bali. Howard's powerful political machine would turn on, and have her back in the loving arms of her family as quick as you could say "Hey, I'm a rich, connected, influential member of the Liberal party".

Unfortunately for Schapelle, she is not the daughter of one of those "chosen ones", she is the daughter of an average Australian family from an average Australian community. She went to an average Australian Government school and her family probably do not belong to the Liberal party. They are hard-working tax-paying aussies, who are not getting a fair go in Indonesia.

It is the duty of the Australian government to take steps to ensure Schapelle's trial is fair. The only reason she had legal representation is because a private citizen is paying for it. What should I as an average australian expect from the Australian government if this young girl was my daughter? What if this young girl were your daughter, John? What action would you expect the Australian government to take?

Be warned John, that it will not be children overboard, nor will it be cuts to medicare, or leadership challenges that will topple your government. It will be one defenceless, innocent, powerless Australian that you have chosen to ignore. Big mistake. Good luck to you and your family John." Sharon, Sydney,
Australia

"I am willing to be a part of the partition against the schapelle corby case. I am definitely against the charges that could be her fate. I believe she is innocent. Who could be that stupid to put 4 kg of marijuana in a body board bag that has to go through a x-ray? I should think no one in their right mind would do so, knowing that their fate would be the death sentence or life imprisonment." Tara, Australia

"I support this petiton to free Ms Corby, I like most Australians believe she is innocent." Sherelle, Australia

"Mr Howard, Schapelle Corby is obviously innocent. It is only necessary to follow the story and look at her face to realise this. Please show some compassion and also LOGIC. As we have been told, the marijuana would be worth a lot more in Australia, so it is illogical that she would be importing it to Indonesia. You have the power to help her. The awful situation that she is in could happen to any australian. Imagine how you would feel if it was your daughter who was facing these charges. You need
to be compassionate and strong. Your job is to protect Australians." Dr Hilary, Australia

"Schapelle's ordeal could happen to anyone. It's blindingly clear that the Australian government has no sincere interest whatsoever in assisting her or indeed any other Australian in trouble overseas - their response so far is sickening! I find the whole situation terrifying! Why would anyone wish to travel to Indonesia from now on?" Doreen, Sydney

"Dear Schapelle , i know , we all know that you are innocent even the 3 judges know you are innocent every man and his dog knows it , its so plain and simple to see ....Stay strong girl dont give up because im sure every Aussie is behind you my dear , we will help you through this nightmare and share your pain ..lets get this girl a fair trial....jokes over" Dan, Unknown

"I, like most Australians, can see Schapple is innocent. And I, like most Australians, will boycott Bali for life if see is found guilty." Gavin, Perth

"I can't help but think this poor girl is an unwitting pawn in something that is not what it seems. Do the AFP and the Indonesian police know more than what we do? Surely the AFP with their expertise know the truth. I can't imagine security tapes showing her, walking into Brisbane Airport, with 4kg of marijuana looking cool calm and collected. If this is a scheme to scare would be mules then I hope the AFP is prepared to fund Schapelles Psycho Therapy for the rest of her life." Kim, Brisbane

"Australia and the rest of the first world have done enough to support the jungle economies of South-East Asia. The fact that citizens of a first-world nation are subject to such backward legal systems is a blight on the positioning we like to think exists in the world today. Consider the economies of scale in consuming 4.1 kgs of marijuana when you consider the weight of a packet of normal cigarettes. At a packet a day you would be smoking for nearly a year to get through so much weed. Consider also the nature of the Indonesian forensic system….television in the form of the CSI series shows more common sense in fiction that what these so called investigators show in real life. Schapelle’s position is hopeless not because those supporting her have not acted with the vigor and fastidiousness to free her but because her position is flawed through the legal system in which those are fighting for her. Indonesian police say we should have faith in their legal system? I have more faith in the TAB keeping the racing industry honest…..

Our government needs to stop playing cards and smoking cigars with the Asian governments and start showing the way as the only first world economy in the region. The third world needs to start shaping up with those nations that support their fragile economies; rather than threatening their citizens with execution and squalid detention for crimes that are as insignificant as their contribution to the planet’s culture." Daniel, Australia

"I wish to express my support for Schapelle Corby, i strongly believe you are innocent . The Indonesian justice system is a circus , their laws are barbaric and stink of hypocrisy . How can you prove your innocence when your hands are tied behind your back and you cannot obtain help from a gutless Australian Government . How can you prove your innocence when the corrupt Indonesian Government will not allow Australian forensic police to ascertain where the drugs were grown , also they contaminate the evidence with their DNA and then burn the evidence . Why would you import drugs worth thousands of dollars in Australia and worth a pittance in Bali . Why would you import drugs in an open bag knowing very well what the consequences are with Indonesians barbaric laws that contravene human rights . Let people power assist this hapless victim of circumstances tempered by a incompetent police , an inadequate legal defence and a gutless Australian Government . Free Schapelle now." Steve . Australia

"John Howard you and your government are a disgrace. How can you let this poor girl suffer from hour to hour sitting in a Balinese prison, possibly facing a firing squad in the near future, and sit on your hands. Surely, something can be done to relieve Shapelle and her family from this nightmare. If Shapelle is harmed we will boycott everything Indonesian. Our love & prayers for Shapelle." Jared & Debbie - Modanville, Australia

"In looking for as much information as I can find about this sad situation, I came upon your site, and I'm happy to offer my support for Ms. Corby. I don't know how much, if any good this will do, but I
cannot remain silent; especially when a most likely innocent person's life is on the line. I don't even support the death penalty for guilty people, so you can imagine how I feel about innocent people facing the possibility of such a fate.

Draconian drug laws, along with a legal system that makes it very difficult for people to reasonably defend themselves represent potential for the worst sort of travesty, and I'm very concerned for
Ms. Corby's life. Please do add my name to your petition. I only wish I could do much more than this. At the very least, Schapelle Corby will be in my prayers." Melissa, Copalis Beach, WA, USA

"Please add my name to the petition. Schapelle Corby is innocent. Please let her return home. The Bali bomber mastermind gets his sentence reduced to just years for killing a few hundred people and Schapelle Corby may face a firing squad?... And I thought George Bush was unreasonable." Alexander, USA

"Please add my name to the list in petitioning the Australian Government to take stronger action to save Schapelle Corby from an Indonesian firing squad: The punishment she has received already is more than she should ever have had to go through." Michael, Spokane, WA, USA

"PLEASE ADD MY NAME TO THE PETITION TO FREE SCHAPELLE CORBY." MARLENE,
SPOKANE, WASHINGTON, USA (AUSTRALIAN CITIZEN)

"Please Prime Minister John Howard" do something urgently to free this innocent Ausralian Girl and have her brought home to her family and friends in Australia." Glenda, Auckland New Zealand

"Sirs, U have taken up nice movement to save the innocent. In these days of rule of law everywhere, the fixed and adamant laws sometimes need reviewing. In the present case if sufficient evidence to show her innocence can be afforded by the government of her origin, may be she gets chance to prove her innocence. all opportunity must be given to protect her life. Drug abuse is very bad for human society we do understand. But the culprits get away and the poors get caught. The roots of drug traffic must be cut to pieces. Just NOT punishing this one lady who has more chances of her innocence giving her benefit of doubt is necessary. US Govt. have also taken false decision in case of Chief Minister of Gujarat in INDIA Narendra Modi not giving him VISA . VERDICT WITHOUT TRIAL. Indian people have strong grudge against US for such unjust approach. I will join U in expressing that the innocnece be proved for her, with helping hand to gather evidences where Australian Chief can do more." PVYAGNIK, India- Lawyer.
