Streets of Hanoi, North Vietnam

By Gabrielle Reilly

Watch this 3 min video on the right side of the page of my amazing journey in a boat along the Halong River through three caves, in North Vietnam:

Hanoi is about what you would expect from a bustling Asian city with the exception that nowadays they ride mopeds instead of push bikes. Actually there are millions of mopeds in Hanoi which makes crossing the roads somewhat hairy. They do not observe traffic light signals, sidewalks or even street directions. Crossing roads on foot often requires crossing five lanes of oncoming traffic and crosswalks are not even acknowledged.

We stayed at two hotels throughout my stay in Hanoi; the five star Hanoi Hilton which was pleasant and the three star Army Hotel which provided basic, clean rooms for a reasonable price amidst the soldiers of Vietnamese Military who own the hotel. The Army Hotel is a popular destination for those adopting Vietnamese or Cambodian children.

If you enjoy local culture don’t miss the Water Puppet Theatre.

If you are looking for some great food we had a world class, sensational meal at Restaurant Bobby Chinn overlooking the Hoan Kiem Lake. The Press Club restaurant offers many authentic Western favorites for those yearning for familiar food as well as selling bottles of wine.

The cities chaotic power lines are often held up by bamboo sticks propped up on the side walk so watch where you’re walking. Try to avoid walking in thunderstorms as falling branches often hit the power lines.
